Company description:: January 27, 2004 …Stars on the world folk music stage, Kate and Anna McGarrigle have completed their ninth CD La Vache qui pleure and are returning to Toronto after five years. They will perform at Hugh’s Room on February 18 with dates in Belleville, Kingston and Ottawa to follow. Kate and Anna McGarrigle are singers, musicians and songwriters of international reputation whose career has spanned more than 30 years and gained critical and popular acclaim throughout North America, Europe and the Far East. They were awarded the Order of Canada in 1994. Kate and Anna’s music has earned "Record of the Year" awards from Melody Maker, Stereo Review, the New York Times and others, and has been widely recorded by artists such as Linda Ronstadt, Judy Collins, Emmylou Harris and Nana Mouskouri.
La Vache qui pleure is complemented by the reissue of the McGarrigle sisters’ first album sung entirely in French, their 1980 release Entre Lajeunesse et la sagesse (sometimes called "The French Record.") Natives of Saint-Sauveur-des-Monts, these two usually release albums deserving a maximum number of stars. Critics have acclaimed La Vache qui pleure, making it no exception to the rule. This is yet another classic, up there with Matapédia, Heartbeats Accelerating, Dancer with Bruised Knees and The McGarrigIe Hour.
As usual, their remarkable voices resonate in superb harmony. But that’s not all: multi-instrumentalists, they give a very personal touch to the arrangements, with Kate on guitar, banjo, piano and accordion, and Anna contributing accordion, keyboards, guitars, banjo and recorder.
Petite annonce amoureuse sets the mood right from the start, its atmospheric intro evoking Daniel Lanois’ Acadie —a kindred spirit with Charlebois’ Coeur en chômage. The only song adapted in English by the McGarrigles, Ah tournesol, features good old violins à Ia Fairport Convention. Kate picks up her violin for Le Bambocheur among other tracks and also for Hurle le vent, in which lyricist Philippe Tatartcheff (Swiss-born but now living in Quebec) pulls off a convincing recitation. Tatartcheff has also revamped the sentimentalism of Rose blanche by drawing inspiration from the great Aristide Bruant. The track list also features a stellar rendition of American folk singer Malvina Reynolds’ Little Boxes, adapted by Graeme Allwright. Tant le monde, with its very Beatlesque guitars, provides another highlight.
La Vache qul pleure is supported by the usual extended family of collaborators. Besides the faithful Tatartcheff, we can hear Kate and Anna’s respective daughters, Martha Wainwright and Lily Lanken, contributing their angel voices, plus multi-instrumentalist Michel Pépin, violinist Joel Zifkin, John McColgan (drums), Michael Jerome Brown (slide guitar) and Daniel Thonon (hurdy-gurdy).
Produced by Kate and Anna, La Vache qui pleure delivers yet another proof of why the McGarrigle sisters are acclaimed from New York to London and why their songs can be found in the repertoire of great artists such as Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt and Joan Baez.
