"Female-fronted pop/rock with energy, passion, soul and honesty" is how Liam Hamer, a multi-instrumentalist/producer from the UK duo Soulpower described their music when asked. A listen to their long-awaited debut album 'Roots and Wings' confirms this beyond any doubt. In a musical era dominated by manufactured acts, self-reflective intellectual so-called rock bands and flesh-baring females, Soulpower are a welcome breath of fresh air.
In any given major CD release, the work of hundreds - sometimes even thousands have gone into it. The work of 2 have went into this one, not that you'd know it by listening to 'Roots and Wings'. The 2 are the married duo Anni Ernst Hamer(Vocals) and Liam Hamer(guitars, bass, keyboards, percussion, production). Anni and Liam are proud supporters of independent music and this debut album is all their own work from the writing, recording, mixing and mastering of it’s 12 songs to the CD artwork and promotion of the album. Added to this the duo have a remarkable story of how they got together both musically and personally. They started out almost 3 years ago as a trans-atlantic internet collaboration with Anni in the USA and Liam in the UK. The eventful last 3 years have climaxed in this CD release.
With a voice reminiscent of such vocal heavyweights as Jewel, Stevie Nicks, Annie Lennox and Tori Amos, 22-year old Anni Ernst Hamer is a vocalist and lyricist out of the top drawer. She is equally at home on reflective love songs such as 'All I Need', uplifting pop/rockers like the albums opening track 'Old Fashioned Love Song' and seething guitar-heavy songs like 'She's Broken' and 'You're Going Down'. Her voice draws you in with it’s beauty and versatility and refuses to let you go until each song is over. Her lyrical ability can only be described as a gift.
The other half of Soulpower, Liam Hamer, is responsible for playing every single instrument on the album as well as recording, mixing and mastering it. His incredible musical ability is on show throughout the album with particular highlights being his vicious guitar-assault on 'She's Broken' and his infectious piano-playing on 'Gone So Long' the albums epic track 10 and the beautiful string-laden story about the state of the world today 'Somewhere In The World'.
This excellent debut album not only demonstrates the song-writing and musical ability of an exceptional duo, in the process it flies the flag for independent music, the UK and proves that if you put your mind to something - anything is possible with a little bit of 'Soulpower'. This is an album worthy of being in any CD collection.
