NEW YORK, Nov. 25, Death of the Party will
perform "AssassiNation: We Killed Kennedy," a rock opera by the
writer of Vampyr Theatre, at the Slipper Room, 167 Orchard Street (on
the corner of Orchard and Stanton Streets, one block below Houston
Street), on Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 11 p.m. Admission is $5.
It was not a conspiracy, but a coincidence that several groups
decided to assassinate President Kennedy on the same day, at the same
time, and in the same place. That's the theory behind the rock opera
which premiered at the Bowery Poetry Club on November 22nd, the 40th
Anniversary of President John F. Kennedy's death.
Among the ad-hoc conspirators implicated in this irreverent and
satirical new interpretation of the historic event are the shadow
government, the CIA, Ladybird Johnson, US Steel, Sam Giacano's
mistress, the presidential limo driver, Brian Epstein, Joe DiMaggio,
and UFOs.
Tony Sokol, veteran NY producer and creator of the infamous
Vampyr Theatre, is the writer and director of the 75-minute piece
that features live music by Death of the Party, as well as a
revolving cast of NYC underground luminaries which has included Miss
Kitty, Jamie Scandal and Cherry Serious. The music varies in style
from classic rock to speed-zydeco, with healthy doses of prog-rock,
metal rap and 60's girl group added to the mix.
Writer and conductor Tony Sokol has been working in music and
theatre for over 20 years. A legend in the goth and underground
theatre communities as the creator of the Vampyr Theatre stage show,
Sokol is also an accomplished musician, having been a part of the
bands Queer Jesus, The Others, Busted Chops, Head First, and 4Q. He's
written music for 4 films and over 20
stage productions and has appeared on the Joan Rivers Show (TV),
Strange Universe, BBC Television, and Britain's "The Girlie Show". He
is the writer of 2 short films and over a dozen plays.
Of his new rock opera, Sokol says, "The story is about the
plotters and the cover-up of the assassination. President Kennedy is
not the focus, he's a figure in the distance and dead for most of the
show. I wanted to continue my tradition of writing the villains. I'm
not portraying Kennedy as a villain, I'll leave that for the Weekly
World News."
